NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY
NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC TO SUBMITCOMMENTS 0N AN
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY REPORT FOR THE
PROPOSED REHABILITATION AND UP-GRADING OP INFRASTRUCTURE .
AND SOCIAL AMENITIES AT MERU CONSEFVATION AREA.
PURSUANT to Regulation 2 1 of the Environmental (Impact
Assessmçnt and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment
Management Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental
impact assessment study report for the proposed rehabilitation and
up-grading of infrastructure and social amen'ities kit Meru
Conservation Area.
The proposed project will entail rehabilitatioll and up-grading of
the conservancy infrastructure which will include: up-grading the
Kipukona-Murera Road. up-grading of internal accessaroads, erecting
three new lates to and from the park. construction of three airstrips,
two campsltes, new staff houses and administrative blocks at park
headquarters. Thc project will also include community development
activities like: water proiects, tree nurseries and veterinary services.
The proposed project wtll be carried out in various districts
nlmely; Meru North, Tharaka, Isiolo, Garissa, Mwingi and Tana
River, which are covered by the large Mcru Conservation Area. The
conservation area houses Meru and Kora National Parks', Mwingi and
Bisanadi National Reserves. Fifteen rivers and streams flow through
the Meru National Park to join the Tana River. The a' rea is also richly
vegetated witb indigenous forests covering a total area of fourty one
(41 ) sqqare kilometers. '
The objective of the project is to rehabilitate the Meru
Conservation Aj'ea in order to secure its biodiversity for conservation
and tourisnl. ' ' '
The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation
measures:
