THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT

PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed project. The proponent, Crossnet Limited, is proposing to construct 370 affordable housing units (1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments) including a car park, recreational facility and management office on a 2.2 acres parcel of land (Plot L.R. No. 8393/17/18/24/25) in Ruaraka Housing Estate within Roysambu Ward, Nairobi City County. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Proposed Mitigation Measures • Control areas generating dust particles through regular cleaning or sprinkling of water to suppress dust at the site and the access roads used by trucks. • Vehicle idling time shall be minimized, and the contractor is to carry out routine maintenance of vehicles and other machinery as per the manufacture's specifications to reduce emission of greenhouse gases. • Avoid spillage of loose soil to the road when transporting, to reduce continuous swirling of dust by traffic and sensitize drivers to avoid off road driving. • Install dust protective nets around the site to cushion the nearby residents from dust pollution and preserve the trees around the site to act as dust obstructers. • Adhere to the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Air Quality) Regulations, 2014. • Vehicle engines to be switched off while offloading materials and avoid gunning of vehicle engines or hooting especially when passing through residential estate areas, churches, schools and hospitals. • Ensure that all vehicles and construction machinery are kept in good condition all the time to avoid excessive noise generation. • Provide the workers with sound PPE to cushion them from noise pollution. • Undertake loud noise and vibration level activities during off-peak hours during the day (i.e. preferably between 12.00 noon and 2.00 p.m.).
