THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT
(No. 8 of 1999)
REGISTRATION
PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental (Impact
Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment
Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental
Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of proposed mining of gypsum.
The project is located in Tula Valley, Tana River District, Coast
Province.
The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures:
Possible Impacts
Mitigation Measures
1. Air pollution
• Installation of equipment covers.
•Minimize drop distances by using adjustable height.
•Service dust control equipment.
•Wetting work areas and storage piles.
•Building encroaches around dust sources.
•Spraying water as a fine mist through special nozzles.
2. Destruction of habitant for • Planting of a screen of trees flora and fauna sound quarry areas.
•Rehabilitation of disused areas.
3.Noise • Maintenance, modification and upgrading of plant and equipment.
4.Health and safety • Use of safety gears like ear muffins, gloves, goggle to be strictly enforced.
•Review of the entire safety protocol with respect to quarry safety in order to improve it.
5. Loss of land through wastage • Targeted and ordered approach to mining.
•Leave land of which there is no intention to quarry undisturbed.
•Rehabilitation of exhausted blocks.
