PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of proposed work for strengthening water transmission mains (package' 3) of Nairobi Water and Sewerage Emergency Physical Investments Project (NWSEPIP). The proposed project consists of DN 700 complimentary transfer pipeline between Gigiri and Kabete Reservoirs and related pumping equipment to ensure that a supplementary flow of 42,000 square metres/day transferred from Gigiri to Kabete. Further proposed is a DN 600 pumping main from Kabete Reservoir to Uthiru Reservoir and DN 600 and DN 500 gravity pipeline from Uthiru Reservoir to Karen. The project transverses the edge of Karura Forest through Kibagare, Loresho, Waiyaki Way to Uthiru, Waithaka, Lenana High School, through to Ngong Forest, Ngong Road and then Karon Township. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitieation measures: Possible Impacts Mitigation Measures 1. Vegetation disturbance/flora • Acquire permission to work in and fauna protected conservation areas. • •Discourage bush meat hunting. •Rehabilitate all disturbed areas. •Provide environment awareness training to all employees. •Impose penalties for illegal cutting of trees or illegal possession of plants and animals. •Position site in infrastructures to avoid sensitive flora and fauna habitats and also not to hinder the free movement of animals. 5. Land contamination, erosion • Develop an erosion and and sediment management sediment control plan prior to commencement of works. •Provide for proper storage and sanitation utilities on site. •Provide for run-off water diversions as appropriate. •Take corrective measures on noticing indication of land contamination or erosion, •Follow procedures for chemical handling and dispensing 6. Occupational health and safety • Provide for First Aid facilities per the Factories and Other Places of Work Act. •Provide and clearly display emergency contacts. •Develop and maintain a detailed and site and specific Emergency Response Plan. •Provide appropriate signage and warnings at work site. •Provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to workers and any visitors. 15th February, 2008 Possible Impacts Mitigation Measures Liaise with the Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety Department to provide for appropriate induction training and regular updating of worker skills on occupational health and safety.
