GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 1264

PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of proposed Jipe Rombo Electric Fence at the Tsavo West National Park. The proposed project consist of resolving persistent human wildlife conflicts in Taveta Division, minimizing damage to crops and property by wild animals and to act as a deterrent to would be poachers. The project will be located at Tsavo West National Park. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures: Possible Impacts Mitigation Measures I. Loss of vegetation cover and — Restrict clearing only to fence soil erosion alignment section. Allow regeneration of graminoid layer along the fence line after installation to cover the soil. 2. Vegetation degradation due to — Undertake scientific the restricted animal management of the mega movement herbivorous. Translocation if the carrying capacity is exceeded. —Carry out monitoring of wildlife habitat. 3.Malfunctioning of the fence — Hire and train fence technicians to ensure that the fence is checked for effective alVvays. Install clearly labelled warning signs written "Hatari" to the electric wires to caution. 4.Lack of funds to maintain the — Provide a fence maintenance fence - kitty (Endowment Fund) that will receive allocations annually.
