. THE,ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT

PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environment -(Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment bianagement Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental- ImpactAssessment Study Report for the implementation of proposed Kenya—Uganda Oil Pipeline Extension Project. The proposed project entails the designing, developing construction and operatiotrof a ten (10) inch diameter pipeline starting from Eldora in Kenya to Kampala in Uganda for a total distance of 352 kilometres. The Project anticipates they following impacts and. mitigation measures. Possible impact Mitigation measures 1. Loss of habitue fit) Controlled work' activities sensitive areas. (iii)`' Replanting where need be. (iv) Obtain license to undertake construction trough forests. (a) Sensitize workers on wildlife. (a) Restrict vehicular transport in wildlife areas. (a) Use horizontal building technology as opposed to open cut method. Carry out regular surveillance for oil leaks in rivers crossed. Develop stringent spill' comml° and recovery measures. Implement procedures for hazardous materials management Provision of emendate spill response equipment. Oil spill clearrupequipmentwillbe available at significant water crossing, for quick- resPonsa should a spill occur. Use of open- trend!' crossing technique for major roads. (a)Minimise duration of closure of roads and provide-temporary access where necessary. (6) Consultation with affected stakeholders. 6. Impacts Off (a) Meetingwith community to ensure community effective communication of the alongpipeline project impacts and mitigation measures in place. (b)Maintain- a disciplined workforce along the route. Employ local communities along the route.
