PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of proposed Apartments on Plot No. 589 section 1/MN Nyali, Mombasa. The proposed project entails construction of 36 apartments in 3 blocks. Each block with 7 floors, swimming pool, gym, tennis/volley ball court, gardens and parking. Various activities such as site clearance, ground preparation, assembly of building materials and actual work will be carried out. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures: Possible Impacts Mitigation Measures 1.Dust disturbance • Regular sprinking of water. •Provision of dust masks to workers. •Selective cutting of trees. 8. Increase in vehicle • Tracks ferrying materials, tools and traffic in the area equipment to the site to observe the set speed limits to avoid accidents. •Only one personal car be allowed per apartment. •Management to provide for adequate internal parking, each apartment to be allocated at least one parking. 3. MV 478 AND MV/479 KILIFI INVITATION OF PUBLIC COMMENTS PURSUANT to regulation 21 ' of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the Implementation of proposed man steel mill on plot No. MV/478 and MV/479, Kilifi. The proposed project entails the manufacture high quality steel from scrap metal using electric arc furnace technology. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures: Possible Impacts Mitigation Measures 1.Solid waste management • All solid waste generated will be managed and disposed according to the waste management regulations, 2006. 2.Air Pollution • Install scrubbers to remove particulate matter. •Install bag type filters to trap dust and particulate matter and associated toxic substance. •Use wet system such as water shower to trap any impurities in the emissions. 3. Water Pollution • Install an effluent treatment plant to treat waste water to acceptable environmental standards before discharge to the environment. •Sedimentation of the effluent to remove suspended solids. •Chemical treatment of effluent by PH adjustment to precipitate heavy metal. •Physical treatment by filtration to remove solids. 4. Dust disturbance • Regular sprinkling of water on open surface and dust grounds. •Selective cutting of trees on the site. Planting trees on open areas. •Provision of dust mask to employees. 5. Noise disturbance • Construction work to be limited to daytime only. •Immediate neighbours to be notified in writing on the date of commencement of construction work at least one month in advance. •Provision of ear protectors to workers.
