GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 3182

PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of proposed apartmerns on plot No. 4151/3, Malindi. The proposed project entails the building of 37 apartments staff quarters, driving school, swimming pool and offices. The Project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures. Possible impact Mitigation measures 1. Noise disturbance • All construction work to be • limited to daytime only. •Immediate neighbours to be notified in writing on the date of commencement of construction work at least one month in advance. •All employees likely to be exposed to high noise to be provided with ear protectors. 2. Increase in vehicle • Tracks ferrying materials, tools and traffic in the area equipment to the site to observe the set speed limits to avoid accidents. •Only one personal car be allowed per apartment. •Management to provide for adequate internal parking, each apartment to be allocated at least one parking. 3. Increased demand for• Approximate volumes of water to be water and electricity required in order to put in place supply mechanisms of reliable supply. •Water saving devices such as push taps to be installed to minimize lose through loose taps. •Sinking of borehole to be done after obtaining clearance and licensing from all relevant government authorities. •Energy saving bulbs to be used in lighting. •Use of solar energy. 4. Solid waste • Soli/ waste to be managed according to management. the waste management regulations. •Management of apartment to contract a •licensed waste collection company. •Color code to be used to distinguish waste bins of different-wastes. •Waste to be sorted at source. Possible impact Mitigation measures •Effluent to be periodically analyzed (every 3 months) to ensure BOD is maintained at 30gm/1 or less and COD at 50gm/1 or less. •Septic tanks to be regularly maintained to address leakages and bursts. •Local ground water to be maintained to address leakages and bursts. •If septic tanks and soak pits will be preferred system, then they should be regularly emptied. •If a sewage treatment plant will be preferred system, then its efficiency in treating the sewage before discharge to the environment must be of the acceptable environmental standards.
