PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the rehabilitation and augmentation of existing Garissa Sewerage System, Garissa District. The proposed project entails rehabilitation and augmentation of existing Garissa Sewerage System, Garissa District. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures. Possible impacts Mitigation measures 1.Rise in ground water table • Enhance proper workmanship during construction. 2.Disease hazards problem • Refill borrow area to avoid ponding 3.Operation and • Garissa Water and Sanitation maintenance of the new Company (GAWASCO) to recruit sewerage system. more staff to man the sewage. •Train staff in sewerage maintenance works and attitude change. •Purchase adequate maintenance equipment, vehicles and motor- cycles 4.Occupational health safety • Provide protective gear to the sewarage maintenance staff. 5.Solid waster management • Increase collection efficiency. 6.Impact on project land • Sensitization of the community 7.Impact on wildlife • Enforce wildlife passege corridor as per Bouragi draft physical development plan.
