PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the rehabilitation and augmentation of existing Garissa Sewerage System, Garissa District. The proposed project entails rehabilitation and augmentation of existing Garissa Sewerage System, Garissa District. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures. Possible impacts Mitigation measures 1.Rise in ground water table • Enhance proper workmanship during construction. 2.Disease hazards problem • Refill borrow area to avoid ponding 3.Operation and • Garissa Water and Sanitation maintenance of the new Company (GAWASCO) to recruit sewerage system. more staff to man the sewage. •Train staff in sewerage maintenance works and attitude change. •Purchase adequate maintenance equipment, vehicles and motor- cycles 4.Occupational health safety • Provide protective gear to the sewerage maintenance staff. 5.Solid waster management • Increase collection efficiency. 6.Impact on project land • Sensitization of the community Possible impacts Mitigation measures 7.Impact on wildlife • Enforce wildlife passage corridor as per Bouragi draft physical development plan. Gazon NOTICE No. 4454 THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT (No. 8 41999) THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED ADDITIONAL PETROLEUM TANKS AND A TRUCK OFF-LOADING FACILITY AT THE NATIONAL NAIROBI TERMINAL DEPOT INVITATION OF PUBLIC COMMENTS PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environment (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of proposed additional petroleum tanks and a truck off-loading facility at the National Nairobi Terminal depot. The main objective of the project is to enhance the security of petroleum products supply to the proponent's customer in Kenya, East Africa and the great lakes region. The project is located at the National Nairobi Terminal Depot, within National Oil Corporation of Kenya compound. The Project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures. Possible impact Mitigation measures 1. Waste management • Atmospheric emissions should comply with international air quality regulations. •Ensure Nairobi City. Council standards for sewage management. •Waste to be sorted and disposed according to Legal Notice No. 121 of 2006; Waste Regulations and Nairobi City Council requirements. •Metal to be salvaged. •Potentially contaminated hydrocarbon wastewater will be discharged in compliance with Legal Notice No. 120 Possible impact Mitigation measures of 2006; Water Quality Regulations. •Process areas will be paved and curbed to avoid contaminating storm water. 2. Air emissions • Use of dust suppressions techniques. •Air emissions from the construction equipment • will be localized and temporary. •Routine inspection and maintenance of construction equipment. 3. Waste water discharge • Process areas will be curbed to contain any spills and runoff. •Develop a storm management plan. •Potentially contaminated waste water will be treated in an oil water separator that will be monitored regularly for effluent quality. •Use of reinforced concrete foundations for the tanks, use of impermeable membranes. 4. Noise pollution • Ensure that noise generated does not exceed the Kenya national guidelines at the property boundaries.
