THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT
(No. 8 of 1999)
REGULATION
PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environment (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management
Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of proposed satellite dish (VSAT) installation.
The proposed project entails installation of aperture terminal
(VSAT) to receive signals from a geostationary communications satellite.
The project is located on L.R. No. 209/5459, Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The Project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures.
Possible impact
Mitigation measures
1. Site excavation
• Ensure well managed excavations to ensure no destruction of underground cables
•Proper refilling of excavated cuttings.
2. Air pollution
• Ensure proper working conditiohs of concrete mixer to minimize exhaust gases.
•Water stock piles of soils and other loose materials.
•Provide dust masks for personnel during dust generations.
3. Noise pollution
• Inform the neighbours about the ongoing activities.
•Enclose the site.
•Install silencer on generators.
4. Public health and
• Ensure proper solid waste collection and occupational safety disposal.
•Provision of overalls, helmets safety boots and other protective gadgets.
5. Protection from
• Proper earthing of the equipment.
electrical power
•Construction of a masonry wall around the installations.
6. Protection from • Ensuring that amplifiers output is radiation terminated before switching on equipment.
•Orientation of the reflectors facing upwards to minimize chances of exposure of radiation to the human.
•Sealing off the dish installation site from human.
•Configuration of the equipment is done through remote sensors.
7. Fire prevention • Installation of appropriate fire extinguishers.
•Training on fire fighting.
