The road project involves Earthworks, construction of pavements and bitumen surfacing. The project is located in Gucha and Kisii Central Districts. The road project cuts through Masaba Division, Nyancheki Division, Kiamokoma Division and Keumbu Division. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures: Possible Impacts Mitigation Measures Water pollution • No solid waste, fuels or oils should be discharged ihto drainage and streams. •Contain leakages from maintenance. fueling and clearing of vehicles and construction equipment. •Control asphalt preparation plants and transfer facilities. •Identify point sources of pollution along the route and isolate them for professional handling. Sand and soil • Contaminated soil should be degradation removed from site and treated before disposal. •Control dumping of oil residuals, asphalt and vehicle parts. •Top soils from materials sites should be held on site for rehabilitation. •Stabilize out sections, fills and quarries. Topography, • Identify key environmental and solid hydrology features likely to be affected by and drainage cutting. •Integrate landscaping designs to moderate effects of cutting. •Stabilize road side surface with structures. •Vegetation should be left intact on stream flood plains for silt buffering. •All surface runoff to be directed to existing natural drains. Health, safety and security •Contractor to prepare and implement health and safety measures, and present there in a health and safety plan. •Sensitization on HIV/AIDS should be done in the workmen's camps. •Install appropriate signage on diversions for safety of road users. •Provide medical and insurance cover for all employees. Mitigation Measures •Material sites exploitation be planned such that one is exhausted and rehabilitated before opening another section. •Requested quarrying be formalized and benefits defined, no impacts to neighbours. Hold top soils, and vegetation matter near the quarries for back filling and rehabilitation. •Undertake an inventory of the types and qualities of waste generated. •Access opportunities for reducing solid waste generation from operations. •Determine appropriate management options for each type of waste. •Excess soil should be disposed off- sites appropriately. •Provisional material storage on site should be designed and installed.
