PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority, (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed service station and restaurant development. The premise facilities will include a forecourt, canopy, service bay, carwash, tyre repair section, shop, restaurant and stores among other facilities. The project will be located on Plot No. LOC 6/Gikarangu/2123, Maragua District. Possible impacts Mitigation measures Loss of biodiversity and soil erosion Minimize disturbance to flora and fauna in the neighbouring areas. Apply soil erosion control measures and carryout landscaping. Air and noise pollution Ensure that noisy machineries are insulated/temporary fenced. Ensure strict enforcement of on-site speed limits. Avoid excavation works in dry weather and sprinkle water to reduce dust. Restrict construction activities to day time only. Waste management Contract a licenced waste collection and disposal company. Segregate, separate and re-use construction wastes. Connect to a proper septic system and internal sewer network. Provide an efficient drainage system and oil interceptor. Fit hoses with improved nozzle to minimize fuel spills. Traffic Provide acceleration and deceleration lanes. Provide proper warning signs. Fire safety Install proper fire fighting equipments and sensitize workers on fire safety. Avoid storage of flammable materials near possible fire source. Occupational health and safety, security Provide and enforce use of PPEs. Shield construction activities to minimize accidents. Provide first aid facilities and training. Provide adequate security. Water & energy use Harvest rain water and reuse water where possible. Install water conserving taps and energy conserving lighting system. Raise awareness on water and energy conservations Regulatory compliance Obtains all necessary permits & licences prior to operation.
