PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority, (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed Nyosia Farm. The proposed development is for the proposed Nyosia farm to be utilized by Kisii University College. The University intends to develop the farm into a fully fledged faculty of Agriculture and Natural resources including hostels, lecture halls, laboratories, Offices, workshops, catering, library, processing and value addition plant. The proposed project (hereafter called Nyosia farm) is located at Nyosia Village, Kegati sub-location, Kegati location, Keumbu division, Kisii Central District. It is about 2 kilometres off the Kisii Keroka road turning at the Kegati water treatment works following the Kegati Rigoma Road. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Possible Environmental Impacts Suggested Mitigation Measures Dust Use water boozers to minimize dust pollution. Erect a 3 m high iron sheet fence to restrict spread of dust during construction of farm structures. Noise Provide ear muffs to workers. Proper maintenance of construction vehicles, machinery and equipment. Institute a strict inspection program for all machineries. Socio-economic Awareness creation on modern livestock and farming husbandry. Adoption of modern livestock breeds and agricultural practices. introduction of fodder crops and their adoption to neighborhood. Natural terrain and scenery Planting of indigenous, nectar-rich and environmentally-friendly tree species along the river bank buffer strip. Soil conservation measures. Runoff harvesting. Minimize environmental disturbances. Rehabilitate affected areas. Site accidents Health and safety Provision of first Aid Kit to workers. Training workers on first Aid techniques. Display emergency numbers at strategic points. Disposal of waste effluents Ensure regular checks on the drains and waste manholes. Instill strict personal hygiene among farm workers. Recycle/re-use strategies (Biogas). Construction of septic systems/ purification const. wetlands. Land and aquatic ecosystem utilization Ensure appropriate stocking levels. Re-use of pong water for farm. Ensure appropriate stocking levels. Re-use of pong water for farm irrigation. Maintain vegetative buffer zones along the stream. Employ well trained chemical operators. Colonization of the river valley ecosystem Establish indigenous & nectar-rich tree shrubs. Restrict & inspect imported bee species to the farm. Employ well trained apiculture technicians. Use of agro-chemicals Noise emission Adoption of integrated Pesticide management (IPM) including biological control methods.
