PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmen tal (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority, (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed apartments. The proposed project will entail construction of one hundred and fifty-two (152) apartments. The apartments will be of two-bedroomed units only in eight blocks spread across the proposed site all with a ground floor and four floors upstairs. The proposed project site lies within Embakasi Village of Nairobi next to Kenya Airways Staff Housing project that is undergoing construction. The project will be located on LR No. 9042/24. The proposed site is approximately 0.8 hectares. The following are the major anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Possible Impact Mitigation Measures Solid waste Waste minimization by avoiding unsustainable construction practices Provision of dustbins to temporarily hold the waste before disposal Reuse where possible or sale to authorized waste handlers/collectors Solid waste generated at the apartments is disposed off appropriately at authorized dumping sites on a daily basis Proper handling and storage of construction materials to reduce the amount of waste caused by damage or exposure to the elements Water resources Construction of drainage systems Prevention of pollution during construction activities to minimize effects that may arise during surface runoff Prevention of any pollution resulting from construction activities Instituting water saving strategies to minimize water use Construction of drainage channels for proper waste water handling Air and noise pollution Limiting construction traffic movement and operation to efficient and necessary activities Routine maintenance of vehicles and other machinery to be used during construction process to reduce any chances of emissions Minimizing transportation activities to day time only The road leading to the site be sprinkled with water to mitigate excessive dust emission Limiting construction activities to day time only Sensitize construction drivers and machinery operators to switch off engines when not being used Sprinkle the construction site with water to keep dust levels down Soils Excavating only necessary areas Containment of soil heaps to prevent erosion caused by runoff Reduce the use of heavy machinery whenever possible Use of light machinery at the site during construction process Re-vegetate exposed areas on the site through proper landscaping THE KENYA GAZETTE 7th October, 2011 3890 3890 Effluent discharge Effluent discharge shall be channelled to the existing sewer line that serves the area All effluent to meet NEMA standards for discharge Visual intrusion Fencing out the construction site Landscaping and gardening to restore biodiversity and aesthetic qualities of the project site Traffic Prohibit adequate parking facilities within the premises Prohibit parking of construction vehicles along the access road The contractor to hire a parking attendant to guide traffic flow into and within the proposed site to avoid any traffic along the road. Install heavy truck turning signs at a safe distance along the access road to prevent any accidents from the road users. Put speed limit cautions to avoid any possible accidents on site especially during construction phase Provide separate entry and exit points for vehicles to ensure there is free flow of vehicles in and out of the site.
