GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 12282

PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority, (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed development. The proponent proposes to develop modern town houses, a kindergarten, a school, shops and communal facilities. The proposed development will be implemented in four phases. Phase I will be residential cum communal facilities and will include Bungalows and masionettes totaling 400 units, 1 No primary school, 1 No secondary school, 1 No kindergarten and a worship centre. Phase II and III are purely residential (controlled developments) to be implemented by individual members on a controlled plan development and Phase IV will involve construction of 54 blocks two and 23 No blocks three bedroom 4 storey blocks (1824 apartments). The proposed project is at Mwiki off the Thika Super Highway approximately 20 Kilometres from Nairobi City on LR No.12064 in Mwiki, Nairobi county The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Environmental issue Mitigation Measures Architectural incompatibility Harmonization of building scale with existing development in the neighbourhood. Harmonize detail, material and finishes for roofs and walls with existing development in the neighbourhood. Disruption of existing natural environment Development restricted to approved density. Careful layout and orientation of buildings to respect wind and sun direction. Minimum use of reflective buildings material and finishes for roof, wall and pavement. Provision of green and open space planted with grass, shrub and tree cover. Loss of biodiversity Plant species will be planted in lawns and other empty spaces along the streets. Care will be taken to allow fauna to relocate to neighbouring plots. Soil disruption Excavation restricted to targeted construction areas other sites will be improved. Air pollution oil leaks and dust generation Strict enforcement of on-site vehicle speed limit regulations. Use of dust nets to reduce and water sprinkling to reduce dust. Use well maintained vehicles/machinery and environmental friendly fuels. Noise and vibration Avoid use of explosives in construction works. Avoid unnecessary hooting of vehicles and strict adherence to permitted noise levels Impact on water bodies Minimize clearance and any disruption of the riparian vegetation and habitat. Clear pegging of the riparian done will be done. Increased wastewater Provide connection to municipal sewer line. Ensure proper operation and maintenance of sewerage system. Solid waste All solid wastes from the sites such as metals, packaging, food will be collected centrally and removed regularly and disposed of to designated waste sites. 5Rs will be widely employed Health and safety Cordon off work sites to prevent public accessing work areas. Prepare clear work schedules and procedures. Have a clear organizational plan at the site with an occupational, healthy and safety officer. Workers working at height to be suitably trained and provided with PPEs.
