PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority, (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed development of Kurawa saltworks and aquaculture.. The project will involve construction of salt fields, aquaculture facilities, artemia and staff housing. The proposed site is situated about 70km North of Malindi bordering a long beach length of about 10km extending westwards 6km and bordering the northern boundary of Kemu Salt works. The total area is 5,360 Hectares. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Environmental issue Mitigation Measures Soil disturbance and pollution Excavation only at areas of construction. Ensure vehicles delivering materials and machines are in good condition- no leaks. Part of the excavation material will be used for landscaping and beautifying the project site within the mainland Landscaping will be done and additional trees planted to enhance the environment. soil probes and dyke inspection to prevent nutrient loss weather and soil condition analysis to determine fertilizer requirement Document watering times and volumes Water Pollution Refrain from releasing any construction waste into the water Check the site drainage to refrain from sedimentation of the marine environment through storm outfall. Contain packaging of building materials of new equipment installed Monitoring quality of bittern effluent discharged allocate segregated & covered garbage bins Gradual discharge of the waste and especially during heavy rains monitor quality of storm drain into the field Sampling points allocated in bittern tank outlet to monitor quality of effluent. Bio-Diversity Construction of water channels to be done in open mangrove areas with low density trees cover Monitoring of fish catches and fish mortality cases Use fish species common to the region. These should not be new invasive species Monitor fish species diversity, rare species and other aquatic organisms Strict adherence to the Mangrove management plan once the area has been licensed by KFS Support already existing projects by BMU marereni to planting more mangrove seedlings at the intake areas. Planting more trees and provision of security to enhance the current bird populations Air Pollution Ensure the vehicle engines are in good condition to reduce levels of exhaust gases Proponent to rejuvenate existing roads and construct new ones- reduce dust Noise Pollution Construction during daylight hours Drive vehicles into the site without undue noise (hooting) Socio-economic Careful driving vehicles delivering materials Keep an accident register. Implement safety measures, emergency plans and contacts. Install fire fighting and first aid equipment Train of the community on new technology Ensure lighting protection on all the components of the Golf Course irrigation system provide personal protective equipment (hard hats, overalls, safety shoes, knee length rubber boots, respirators and gloves) to employees Training and drills of occupants and staff Improve community access routes/roads to the adjacent areas, share the beneficial use of aquaculture site with the local communities The full report of the proposed project is available for inspection during working hours at: (a) Director-General, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Popo Road, off Mombasa Road, P.O.
