PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of the proposed Rose flowers expansion project on plot no. Nyandarua/Ol Joro Orok Salient/2202/3/4/8/9/10/, 2616 and 2471, Nyandarua County. The Proponent (Primarosa Flowers Limited) of the proposed Rose Flowers expansion project is proposing to carry on establishment and production of cut flower production for export market. The project involves the construction of twenty five greenhouses, water reservoirs and administration offices. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Possible Impact Mitigation measures Loss of vegetation cover.  Ensure excavations cause minimum disturbance to residents, area topography, ecosystems (vegetation) and public utilities.  Maintain well-tuned and serviced machinery to minimize noise and atmospheric emissions.  Source local labour force for enhanced harmony with the neighbourhood.  Ensure minimum destruction of the trees on the site. Air pollution.  Ensure acceptable sanitation and hygiene at contractors camp, that should also not interfere with the surroundings.  Excess unused materials, debris and other solid wastes safely removed from site after construction,  Source local labour force for enhanced harmony with the neighbourhood,  Involve as much as practicable  consultations with an environmental expert as well as health and safety specialist  Building, civil and steel works and mechanical services and agricultural engineering/ irrigation engineers Poor waste collection and disposal.  Consider motivating the workers with a view to enhancing their contribution in environmental management. • Ensure personnel protective equipments, working implements and safety gears are always available to the workers at all times. • Institute a monitoring process for the all production system.  Continuous assessment of the attitude of the neighbouring communities on the effects of the flowersproduction activities.  Develop a database and relevant records  on environmental performance and other monitorable parameters.  Activate the monitoring points as designed in the premises and the surroundings.  Periodical (preferably monthly) sampling.  Schedules and credible analysis of wastes (solid, aerial emissions and wastewater).  Initiate a characterization of the wastes as soon as production commences  Initiate a monitoring schedule for trends in public health, sanitation, hygiene and behavioral changes Environmental pollution.  Provide a forum for human resources development on environmental conservation.  Establish a schedule for continuous improvement of physical capacity on environmental management.  Develop in-house guidelines on environment, health and safety management.  Harmonize operational practices with the national environmental policies and legislation. Poor drainage systems.  Control the flow of raw materials and by-products.  Ensure good maintenance of the drainage network.  Institute appropriate monitoring procedures and guidelines on environmental performance.  Establish and environmental audit and protocol and schedule as per the EIA/Audits regulations,  Encourage workers' participation in environmental conservation aspects.  Analyze waste water to ensure the waste discharge standards and conditions are line with environmental standards.  Apply for effluent discharges licence from NEMA as a requirements as per EMCA legal notice of 120 of 2006 Fire outbreak  Strive to have qualified operators and their supervisors.  Improve the general understanding of the environmental performance by all the workers.  Establish a system for enlightening customers on environment, health and safety.  Establish regular consultative in-house meetings on awareness rising.
