GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 6606

IT IS notified for the information of the general public that rule 4 (1) of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (Election of Members of the Assembly) Rules, 2012, requires that where an election of the Members of the East African Legislative Assembly is to be held, the Returning Officer, who is the Clerk of the National Assembly, shall, by notice in the Gazette, notify that fact and invite interested qualified persons to apply, within a period of seven days, for nomination by a parliamentary political party. It is further notified that an election of Members of the East African Legislative Assembly shall be held on a date to be notified by the Returning Officer in accordance with rule 13 of the Rules which requires that the Returning Officer, by notice published in the Gazette and in at least two daily newspapers of national circulation, appoints an election day. Applications are hereby invited from interested persons for the positions of Member of the East African Legislative Assembly. The application should indicate the parliamentary political party whose 11th May, 2012 THE KENYA GAZETTE 1697 nomination the applicant seeks. The qualifications for election are set out under rule 3 of the Rules and require that, in terms of Article 50 (2) of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community, a person shall be qualified to be elected a Member of the Assembly by the National Assembly of a Partner State if the person— (a) is a citizen of that Partner State; (b) is qualified to be elected a member of the National Assembly of that Partner State under its Constitution; (c) is not holding office as a Minister in that Partner State; (d) is not an officer in the service of the Community; and (e) has proven experience or interest in consolidating and furthering the aims and objectives of the Community. Applications should be addressed to the Returning Officer/Clerk of the National Assembly, P.O. Box 41842-00100, Nairobi, or hand- delivered to the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, so as to be received on or before Thursday, 17th May, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. for onward transmission to the relevant parliamentary political party.
