PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed project. The proponent, Visaren, is proposing to construct the Visaren Omuyanze Funeral Home to be located at Carol Afandi Memorial Clinic on Plot L.R. Nos. KakamegalViyalo/460 and North MaragolilViyalo/1560 at Weligna in Sabatia Sub-County in Vihiga County. It will comprise of a chapel fitted with benches and tables, a body storage area fitted with cabinets and whose floor will be finished in terrazzo, a generator house, an incinerator for management of solid wastes, a pathologist changing room with a bathroom and fitted with lockers etc. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Impacts Proposed mitigation measures Noise and vibrations • Provide workers in noisy environments with ear muffs. • Place noisy equipment in enclosures and away from sensitive environments. • Keep all machinery in good condition to reduce noise generation. • Maintain reasonable working durations whenever possible to reduce the number of complaints concerning noise. • Operate shorter shift period for workers who come in direct contact with high concentrations of noise. • Comply with the provisions of Noise Regulations of 2009. Air quality Suppress dust by water spraying before sweeping and on dusty grounds. • Dispose waste regularly and appropriately to avoid wastes decomposing at collection areas. • Embalm all bodies before storage in order to prevent them from rotting. • Store only enough bodies to the capacity of the mortuary to prevent congestion. • Put in place rules to prevent bodies overstaying in the mortuary in order to give room for new bodies. • Follow relevant legal procedures to remove and appropriately dispose all unclaimed. • Check the refrigeration system daily to detect and repair any malfunctioning which could lead to rotting of bodies. • Spray the mortuary with appropriate smell deodorizers in order to counteract foul smell. The proponent, Lancet Housing Co-operative Society Limited, is proposing to develop Lancet Village on Plot L.R. No. Mavoko Town Block 2/19052 at Katani, Mavoko Sub-County in Machakos County. The proposed project shall be a mixed development of both flats of two storeyed and mansionettes. The entire project shall have a total of one hundred and ninety (190) units of two, three and four bedroomed type plus a commercial centre and kindergarten. Solid waste • Ensure that construction materials leftovers are re-used elsewhere in other projects rather than being disposed of. • Ensure that damaged or wasted construction materials including cabinets, doors, plumbing and lighting fixtures, marbles and glass will be recovered for refurbishing and use in other projects. • Donate recyclable/reusable or residual materials to local community groups, institutions and individual local residents or home owners. • Use of durable, long-lasting materials that will not need to be replaced as often, thereby reducing the amount of construction waste generated over time. • Adherence to Waste Management Regulations of 2006.
