Pursuant to Regulation 21 of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed project. The proponent, Kaminara Agencies Limited, is proposing to provide a facility that will offer solutions on safe disposal of asbestos from various entities that intend to dispose-off the asbestos roofings within the coastal region. The proposed site is located at Mwawesa about 18 kilometers from Kaloleni Town and approximately 10 km off Mombasa Road in Kaloleni Division, Kaloleni Constituency, Kilifi County. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Impacts Proposed Mitigation Measures Air quality • Air monitoring should be done continuously in areas related to asbestos removal works. Temporary storage • Temporary site should be within the premises of asbestos material. • Double wrap in 500 gauge or higher plastic sheet and label appropriately. • Collect debris in sealed polythene woven bags or any other air tight containers. • The bags should then be wrapped, into stacks for easy loading into transport vessels. • Storage area must be restricted and secured on a 24 hour basis. Disposal scheduling .• The disposal and cleaning activities should and hours be limited from 7 am or sunrise (whichever is later) to 5 pm or sunset. No. Kisumu Municipality/Block 2t16 along Kisumu-Busia Road in Kisumu City, KiSumu County. Careful disposal Of waters from equipment washings into public sewer system. • Ensure effective drainage into the septic tank. • Regular maintenance checks on drainage system. • Proper and constant maintenance of the premises plumbing system. • Workers should be notified of sanitation requirements in the premises. Storm water • Roof drainages installed and connected to management and street drains or collected into the water underground tank for use in cleaning, toilet conservation flushing and washing purposes. • • Installation of water meters to monitor amount used. • Installation of water saving tap models.
