The proponent, Belco Properties LLP, is proposing to construct a mixed-use housing project in Kongowea area, Mombasa County comprising of 1 bedroom units, 2 bedroom units and 3 bedroom units occupying a total area of 8,035 meter cubic, 16,560 meter cubic and 17,340 meter cubic respectively, 6 meter wide pedestrian walkways, 2 parking silos with a capacity of 48 cars each per level, village square, courtyards, social halls, food markets and associated facilities and social amenities. Proposed Mitigation Measures • Obtain an authorization permit from KFS and the County Government of Mombasa prior to felling the trees. • Replant trees in the section of the property that will not be developed. • Retain vegetation cover in areas that will not be developed. • Obtain insurance cover for the workers at the site. • Procure and provide adequate and appropriate PPE and enforce their use. • Provide employees with correct tools and equipment for the jobs assigned and train on their use. • Ensure moving parts of machines and sharp surfaces are securely protected with guards to avoid unnecessary contacts and injuries. • Provide a fully equipped first aid box and trained personnel on site at all times during construction. • Provide a standby vehicle and trained medical personnel at the site. • Comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2007. • Provide fire exits within the development. • Provide suitable and adequate fire-fighting equipment, fire hydrant network. • Provide fire alarms and instructions on what do to in the event of fire. • Provide adequate firefighting water storage and pumps. • Size all staircases for emergency escape. • Ensure that the streets are wide enough to allow access for emergency vehicles. • Undertake regular inspections and maintenance of electrical installations. Noise pollution • Provide earmuffs to employees during construction phase. • Sensitize truck drivers to avoid unnecessary hooting and running of vehicle engines. • Comply with Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution (Control) Regulations, 2009. Storm water • Install a storm water drainage system to management manage runoff and prevent flooding within the development. Traffic • Prepare a traffic management plan. • Erect signage and warnings on the feeder road to forewarn other road users on the use of the road by HCVs. • Offload construction materials on the site and not on the road reserves to ensure smooth flow of traffic. • HCVs delivering raw materials will observe designated speed limits. • Comply with the provisions of the Traffic Act, 2016.
