PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed project. The proponents, Dr. Nelson Muraya Wachira and Agnes Mwonjoria Muraya proposes to construct a seven storey hospital development with a bed capacitity of 150-200 comprising of Laboratory, Morgue, Recovery Room, Emergency Operating Room, Pharmacy, Nephrologist, Optical, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, E.N.T, Orthopedic, Gastroenterology, Obstetrics, Paediatrics Unit, Cardiology, Oncology, Dental Unit, Dialysis Unit, Wards( Antenatal, Labor, Postnatal, Paediatric Surgical Ward, Women’s Surgical Ward), Operating Room, Newborn Unit, 1.C.U, H.D.U, 1n Plot L.R. No. Thika Municipality, Block 5/669 near Nampak in Biashara Location, Thika Sub-County, Kiambu County. Switching off machines while not in use. Sensitize workers on dangers of excess Noise. Excavate only areas to be affected by the buildings. Use heavy when necessary. machinery only Provide soil conservation structures on the areas prone to soil erosion mostly to reduce impact by the run-off. Provide rain water harvesting and storage facilities. Construction of proper self-cleaning storm drains that will collect and dispose storm water from the project site. Water sprinkling on loose matenals e.g. sand and soil. Use of dust screens. Equipment shall be properly tuned and maintained. Discourage the use of wood fuel and encourage the use of renewable energy resources e.g. solar energy. Use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Harvest rain-water. Recycling or re-use of water where possible. Avoid unnecessary wastage. Use of taps that turn off automatically, Install a discharge meter at water outlets to determine and monitor total water usage. Use renewable energy sources e g. solar energy. Install energy saving bulbs. Switch off electrical equipment, appliances and lights when not being used. Provide bill boards at the site/entrance to notify motorists and general public about the development. Employ well trained and experienced drivers. No parking on road reserve. Hire traffic marshal to control traffic when necessary. Observe traffic rules. Delivery of materials to be done during non-peak traffic periods to the maximum extent practicable. Formulate OHS policy. All workers should be provided with protective gears. Provide First Aid Kit on site. Take insurance cover for workers on site. Provide adequate sanitary facilities. Provide fire extinguishers and hydrants within the premises. Install lightning arrester. Project construction should disturb as little area as possible. Landscaping and planting of appropriate vegetation cover e.g. grass, shrubs and flowers. Prevent any form of pollution to the environment. Preserve of some trees within the site. Reduce wastes from the point of generation by purchasing high standard and recommended matenals. Provide facilities for proper handling and storage of waste. Segregate the waste at the site. Encourage re-use and re-cycling of wastes where applicable. Engage services of a registered waste handler to dispose the waste at designated disposal sites. Provide and ensure the usage of well labeled color-coded bins and liners. Hazardous waste to be kept in safe, designated, closed and covered areas awaiting collection to the final disposal site. Contract a registered medical waste handler for collection and disposal of medical wastes at designated sites. Develop standard operating procedures and train the staff handling waste on_ its importance. Provide adequate and safe means of handling all effluents from the facility by connecting to the sewerage system serving the entire project area. Install an onsite treatment plant that can pretreat some effluent to recommended standards before final discharge. Ensure regular monitoring of the sewage discharged from the project to ensure that the stipulated sewage/effluent discharge rules and standards are not violated. Conduct regular inspections = and maintenance for drainage pipe blockages or damages and fix appropriately. Ensure that building plans are approved by the Local Authority and the Local Occupational Health and Safety Office.
